MARTIN BROWNE FINE ART
MARTIN BROWNE CONTEMPORARY* 15 Hampden Street Paddington
It was here in 1970 that artist MARTIN SHARP formed the artist's cooperative YELLOW HOUSE ARTIST COLLECTIVE*. The house was a living work of art and every wall, floor and ceiling became part of the gallery. Open 24 hours a day the multi-media performance and art space may have been Australia's first 'happening'. The Sydney Sunday Mirror said about the opening night "The guests wore really wild gear, and many looked like they had come from a performance of HAIR" which was playing at up the road at The Metro Theatre in Kings Cross at the time. I wonder if they received the noise complaints that seem to plague the area at present. More recently it was home to MARTIN BROWNE FINE ART GALLERY which is greatly missed on Macleay Street. MARTIN BROWNE CONTEMPORARY* is now in Paddington and always a great pleasure.
"Life's a total experiment. You never know what's going to happen and you've got to be able to move fast"
Martin Sharp
